5 Los profetas Hageo y Zacarías hijo de Idó profetizaron a los judíos que estaban en Judá y Jerusalén, en el *nombre del Dios de Israel, que velaba por ellos. 2 Entonces Zorobabel hijo de Salatiel y Jesúa hijo de Josadac se dispusieron a continuar la reconstrucción del templo de Dios en Jerusalén. Y los profetas estaban con ellos ayudándolos.

3 En ese mismo tiempo, Tatenay, gobernador de la provincia al oeste del río Éufrates, y Setar Bosnay y sus compañeros, se presentaron ante los judíos y les preguntaron: «¿Quién los autorizó a reconstruir ese templo y restaurar su estructura?» 4 Y añadieron:[a] «¿Cómo se llaman los que están reconstruyendo ese edificio?» 5 Pero como Dios velaba por los *dirigentes judíos, no los obligaron a interrumpir el trabajo hasta que se consultara a Darío y éste respondiera por escrito.

6 Entonces Tatenay, gobernador de la provincia al oeste del río Éufrates, y Setar Bosnay y sus compañeros, que eran los funcionarios del gobierno de esa provincia, enviaron una carta al rey Darío, 7 la cual decía:

Al rey Darío:
Un cordial saludo.

8 Ponemos en conocimiento de Su Majestad que fuimos a la provincia de Judá, al templo del gran Dios, y vimos que se está reconstruyendo con grandes piedras, y que sus paredes se están recubriendo con madera. El trabajo se hace con esmero y avanza rápidamente.

9 A los dirigentes les preguntamos quién los había autorizado a reconstruir ese templo y restaurar su estructura, 10 y cómo se llaman los que dirigen la obra, para comunicárselo por escrito a Su Majestad.

11 Ellos nos respondieron:

«Somos siervos del Dios del cielo y de la tierra, y estamos reconstruyendo el templo que fue edificado y terminado hace ya mucho tiempo por un gran rey de Israel. 12 Pero como nuestros antepasados provocaron a ira al Dios del cielo, él los entregó en manos de Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, el *caldeo que destruyó este templo y que llevó al pueblo cautivo a Babilonia.

13 »Pero más tarde, en el primer año de su reinado, Ciro, rey de Babilonia, ordenó que este templo de Dios fuera reconstruido. 14 También hizo sacar del templo de Babilonia los utensilios de oro y de plata que Nabucodonosor se había llevado del templo de Jerusalén y había puesto en el templo de Babilonia, y se los entregó a Sesbasar, a quien había nombrado gobernador. 15 Ciro, pues, ordenó a Sesbasar que tomara esos utensilios y los devolviera al templo de Jerusalén, y que reedificara en el mismo sitio el templo de Dios. 16 Entonces Sesbasar llegó a Jerusalén y echó los cimientos del templo de Dios. Desde entonces se ha estado trabajando en su reconstrucción, pero aún no se ha terminado.»

17 Ahora bien, si Su Majestad lo considera conveniente, pedimos que se investiguen los archivos donde están las crónicas de los reyes de Babilonia, para saber si es verdad que el rey Ciro ordenó la reconstrucción del templo de Dios en Jerusalén. Además solicitamos que se nos dé a conocer la decisión de Su Majestad con respecto a este asunto.
Decreto de Darío

6 Entonces el rey Darío ordenó que se investigara en los archivos donde se guardaban los tesoros de Babilonia. 2 Y en el palacio de Ecbatana, en la provincia de Media, se encontró un rollo que contenía la siguiente memoria:

3 En el primer año de su reinado, el rey Ciro promulgó el siguiente edicto respecto al templo de Dios en Jerusalén:

Que se echen los cimientos y se reconstruya el templo, para que en él se ofrezcan *holocaustos. Tendrá veintisiete metros[b] tanto de alto como de ancho, 4 tres hileras de piedras grandes, y una de madera. Todos los gastos serán sufragados por el tesoro real. 5 Con respecto a los utensilios de oro y de plata que Nabucodonosor sacó del templo de Jerusalén y llevó a Babilonia, que los devuelvan a Jerusalén, y que se pongan en el templo de Dios, donde deben estar.

6 Entonces el rey Darío dio la siguiente orden[c] a Tatenay, gobernador de la provincia al oeste del río Éufrates, y a Setar Bosnay y a sus compañeros, los funcionarios de dicha provincia:

Aléjense de Jerusalén 7 y no estorben la obra de reconstrucción del templo de Dios. Dejen que el gobernador de la provincia de Judá y los *dirigentes judíos reconstruyan el templo en su antiguo sitio.

8 También he decidido que ustedes deben prestarles ayuda, sufragando los gastos de la reconstrucción del templo con los impuestos que la provincia al oeste del río Éufrates paga al tesoro real. No se tarden en pagar todos los gastos, para que no se interrumpan las obras. 9 Además, todos los días, sin falta, deberán suministrarles becerros, carneros y corderos para ofrecerlos en holocausto al Dios del cielo, junto con trigo, sal, vino y aceite, y todo lo que necesiten, según las instrucciones de los sacerdotes que están en Jerusalén. 10 Así podrán ellos ofrecer sacrificios gratos al Dios del cielo y rogar por la vida del rey y de sus hijos.

11 He determinado así mismo que, a quien desobedezca esta orden, lo empalen en una viga sacada de su propia casa, y que le derrumben la casa. 12 ¡Que el Dios que decidió habitar en Jerusalén derribe a cualquier rey o nación que intente modificar este decreto o destruir ese templo de Dios!
Yo, Darío, promulgo este decreto. Publíquese y cúmplase al pie de la letra.
Terminación y dedicación del templo

13 Entonces Tatenay, gobernador de la provincia al oeste del río Éufrates, y Setar Bosnay y sus compañeros cumplieron al pie de la letra lo que el rey Darío les había ordenado. 14 Así los *dirigentes judíos pudieron continuar y terminar la obra de reconstrucción, conforme a la palabra de los profetas Hageo y Zacarías hijo de Idó. Terminaron, pues, la obra de reconstrucción, según el mandato del Dios de Israel y por decreto de Ciro, Darío y Artajerjes, reyes de Persia. 15 La reconstrucción del templo se terminó el día tres del mes de *adar, en el año sexto del reinado de Darío.

16 Entonces los israelitas —es decir, los sacerdotes, los levitas y los demás que regresaron del cautiverio—, llenos de júbilo dedicaron el templo de Dios. 17 Como ofrenda de dedicación, ofrecieron a Dios cien becerros, doscientos carneros, cuatrocientos corderos y doce chivos, conforme al número de las tribus de Israel, para *expiación por el pecado del pueblo. 18 Luego, según lo que está escrito en el libro de Moisés, instalaron a los sacerdotes en sus turnos y a los levitas en sus funciones, para el culto que se ofrece a Dios en Jerusalén.
Celebración de la Pascua

19 Los que regresaron del cautiverio celebraron la Pascua el día catorce del mes primero. 20 Los sacerdotes y levitas se habían unido para *purificarse y, ya estando ritualmente *limpios, mataron el cordero pascual por todos los que habían regresado del cautiverio, por sus compañeros los sacerdotes y por ellos mismos. 21 Los israelitas que regresaron del cautiverio comieron la Pascua junto con los que se habían apartado de la impureza de sus vecinos para seguir al Señor, Dios de Israel. 22 Durante siete días celebraron con mucho gozo la fiesta de los Panes sin levadura, porque el Señor les había devuelto la alegría y había hecho que el rey de Persia[d] los ayudara y permitiera reconstruir el templo del Dios de Israel.

5 The prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who watched over them. 2 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak prepared to continue the rebuilding of the temple of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets were helping them.

3 At the same time, Tattenai, governor of the province west of the Euphrates River, and Setar Bosnay and his companions, were presented to the Jews and asked them, “Who authorized them to rebuild this temple and restore its structure? ‘4 They added: [a] ‘What do you call those who are rebuilding that building?’ 5 But God was watching over the * Jewish leaders, not forced to stop work until he consulted Darius and respond in writing.

8 We inform Her Majesty that went into the province of Judah, to the temple of the great God, and saw that is being rebuilt with large stones, and their walls are coated with wood. The work is done with care and advancing rapidly.

9 For the leaders asked who had authorized them to rebuild this temple and restore its structure, 10 and how they are called direct the work, to communicate in writing to His Majesty.

“We are servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the temple that was built and completed long ago by a great king of Israel. 12 But as our ancestors angered the God of heaven, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, the Chaldean * destroyed this temple and took the people captive to Babylon.

13 “But later, in the first year of his reign, Cyrus king of Babylon, ordered the temple of God was rebuilt. 14 also made out of the temple of Babylon the vessels of gold and silver which Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the temple in Jerusalem and had placed in the temple of Babylon, and handed them to Sheshbazzar, whom he had appointed governor. 15 Ciro therefore Sheshbazzar ordered to take those tools and return to the temple in Jerusalem, and they will rebuild in the same place the temple of God. 16 Then Sheshbazzar came to Jerusalem and laid the foundations of the temple of God. Since then he has been working on its reconstruction, but has not yet been completed. “

17 Now if Your Majesty sees fit, ask for an investigation files where the history of the kings of Babylon, to see if it is true that King Cyrus ordered rebuilding the temple of God in Jerusalem. We also ask that you make known the decision of His Majesty regarding this matter.

3 In the first year of his reign, King Cyrus issued the following edict concerning the temple of God in Jerusalem:

That will throw the foundation and rebuilt the temple, for which he offered burnt offerings. Will twenty-seven meters [b] both high wide, 4 three rows of great stones, and timber. All expenses will be borne by the royal treasury. 5 For the vessels of gold and silver which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, to return them to Jerusalem, and to get in the temple of God, where they belong.

6 Then King Darius issued the following order [c] to Tattenai, governor of the province west of the Euphrates River, and Setar Bosnay and his companions, the officials of that province:

Away from Jerusalem 7 and not hinder the work of rebuilding the temple of God. Let the governor of the province of Judah and the * Jewish leaders rebuild the temple in its former site.

8 And I have decided that you should provide assistance, covering the costs of rebuilding the temple with the taxes the province west of the Euphrates River pays the treasury. Do not take time to pay all costs, so they do not interrupt the work. 9 In addition, every day, without fail, will provide them calves, sheep and lambs to be offered in sacrifice to the God of heaven, along with wheat, salt, wine and oil, and all they need, according to the instructions of the priests who are in Jerusalem. 10 So they may offer sacrifices pleasing to the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and his sons.

11 I have given himself that, who disobeys this order, impale him on a beam taken from her own home, and that the house collapse. 12 May the God who dwell in Jerusalem decided to tear down any king or nation that attempts to modify this decree or to destroy this house of God!

Completion and dedication of the temple

13 Then Tattenai, governor of the province west of the Euphrates River, and Setar Bosnay and his companions met at exactly what King Darius had commanded. * 14 So the Jewish leaders were able to continue and complete the work of reconstruction, according to the word of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo. They finished therefore the reconstruction, as mandated by the God of Israel and by decree of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia. 15 The reconstruction of the temple was completed on day three of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of the reign of Darius.

16 Then the Israelites-that is, the priests, the Levites and others who returned from captivity-jubilant dedicated the temple of God. 17 As an offering of devotion, offered to God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs and twelve male goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel, for atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Then, according to what is written in the book of Moses, they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their duties, for worship offered to God in Jerusalem.
Celebration of Easter

19 Those who returned from captivity kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month. 20 The priests and Levites were purified and bound to * as being ceremonially clean, they killed the Passover lamb for all who had returned from captivity, his fellow priests, and for themselves. 21 The Israelites who returned from captivity ate the Passover with those who had separated themselves from the impurity of their neighbors to follow the Lord, the God of Israel. 22 For seven days celebrated with great joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because the Lord had returned the joy and made the king of Persia [d] and let’s help rebuild the temple of the God of Israel.
